Guruvayur

Many Gujarati and other North Indian devotees of Shree Krishna visit Kerala for vacation but do not visit Guruvayur for His darshan. Lack of knowledge about Guruvayur is probably the reason for it. My humble hope is to inform and encourage them to visit Guruvayur and receive His divine blessings.

Guruvayur temple is a Shree Krishna temple near Trichur, Kerala. According to the legend the idol is of Shree Vishnu and was given to Uddhavji by Shree Krishna himself on the eve of His return to Viankunth. Uddhavji recruited the help of guru Brihaspati and Vayudev and installed the divine idol at Guruvayur.

For a Guruvayur devotees a must read is Naryaneeyam, written in about 1590 CE, by a 27 years young saint, scholar and poet named Melpathur Narayana Bhattatiri. According to the legend he was very sick and promised Bhagwan Guruvayur to compose a condensed version of Bhagvat in 100 days with about 10 sloaks per day. At the end of each day’s composition he requested Bhagwan Guruvayur to cure his disease. On the hundredth day he had the darshan of Shree Krishna and was cured of his disease completely and lived to be about 105 years old. This is the power of Bhakti.
